The 'CDM Coordinator' role came in to effect on 6th April 2007 under the new CDM Regulations and placed significant requirements on clients carrying out construction works. This replaces and enhances the old role of 'Planning Supervisor'. At Sheeley & Associates, we use our construction expertise to add value from the outset of all projects expected to be over 30 days or 500 man days in the construction phase. The new CDM Regs focus on competency and as a specialised practice, we not only do we deliver this, we also give insight and suggest solutions through experience on hundreds of jobs per year, we do this quickly and cost effectively too.
Health and safety in both construction and the foreseeable use of a building MUST be a design consideration under the CDM Regs. You are required by legislation to appoint a CDM Coordinator early on to help build in Health & Safety from the start of design work in order to take account of Health and Safety provisions.
3 Reasons why dealing with Health & Safety early is a good idea:
- Injuries, illness and death prevention:
About 100 construction workers die as a result of injuries every year. About 5000 have serious injuries and a further 10,000 suffer '3 day' injuries. Many more leave the industry because of long term illness such as back problems or skin disorders. - Cost benefits of good health & safety management:
The financial as well as the human cost of accident and injury is considerable but can be substantially reduced by designing out health and safety risks as part of the project process. Examples of practices which enhance health & safety can also be cost saving and reduce time on site. [See Examples on the HSE website] - Does your company plan to survive more than 100 projects?
We find that a serious incident will typically occur on 1 in every 100 construction projects. A serious incident usually means one in which the financial impact of a site closure or injury can seriously jeopardise the company viability and would involve HSE officials and the police.
